What is an Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment (ADRT)
An Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment or ADRT is a document that you can create when you have mental capacity to refuse a specific treatment for a future time when you lack capacity to make that decision.
To create a valid an ADRT:
- you must be over the age of 18
- you must specify which treatment you wish to refuse & the circumstances under which you wish to refuse the treatment you must document that you are refusing the treatment even if you might die as a result
- An ADRT is legal if it is valid and complies with the Mental Capacity Act. You can create one yourself online or by downloading forms from Compassion in Dying or the NHS.
